Top managers in credit card abuse?

It is feared that credit card abuse by top managers at the Botswana Agricultural Marketing Board (BAMB) may have bled government of P4.5 million since the facility was introduced in 2008.

Checks and controls over this lucrative facility which is enjoyed by at least seven top managers, have been lax. There is neither monitoring nor auditing of the scheme, The Monitor investigations have revealed.

The card facility was initiated purely to cover expenses incurred by a manager while on official duty. The Monitor can reveal that BAMB internal auditor, Zanele Ziga, whose main responsibility includes scrutinising books and guarding against abuse, has been caught in the centre of the mess. This has left her hands tied as she cannot call others to account while she is also involved in the abuse of the credit card facility. Since 2008, Ziga enjoys a monthly limit of P5,000, which translates to P60,000 a year and P300,000 to date, according to The Monitor sources.
