A top ranking police officer (name known to this publication) has been implicated in a gun licencing scandal after he allegedly obtained firearm licence unprocedurally.A suspended officer at the Arms and Registry Department implicated the officer, alleging that he unofficially obtained the gun licence using his authority.The suspended sergeant, who is now facing charges of official corruption through abuse of office, had been at the time in charge of issuing approved gun licences to qualified individuals.The suspended arms registry official is suspected to have been using his authority to sell gun licences from P40,000 to P50,000.New revelations indicate that the official has threatened that 'he will not go down alone'.
The official revealed that the sergeant owns two guns, a 12-gauge shotgun and a 30-06 rifle which he allegedly obtained unlawfully. An insider also revealed to Mmegi that the sergeant claimed to have copies, which showed evidence that a senior ranking officer abused his power. The copies in the possession of the suspended officer allegedly show no track record of how his superior acquired the gun licence.It is also alleged that the suspended sergeant confessed the involvement of his senior before the matter was referred to the Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS) for further investigations. DIS boss Isaac Kgosi has denied that his office was investigating the gun licencing cases against the senior ranking police officer."We have absolutely no record of such an allegation. The accusations are absurd," said Kgosi. Police spokesperson assistant commissioner Christopher Mbulawa could not comment on the allegations. The Arms and Registry Department at the police has disclosed that any Motswana who is 18 years and above and has a valid national identity card is eligible. There is a raffle once every year in which citizens partake to stand a chance to be one of the chosen few to be considered. The list is then taken to the commissioner for short listing.
