Too sogging wet for a good crop - farmers

FRANCISTOWN: The recent heavy rains here are likely to result in a poorer harvest than the bumper yields they had expected, experts have revealed.

Samson Motlhala, a Crop Production Officer at the Francistown Regional Agricultural Office says the continuous rains are unsuitable for crops. "Not all crops require a lot of water," he says. "Some crops are overpowered by water such that they fail to grow further or germinate." Maize is among such crops for which lack of sunshine is no good. With continuous rain, maize exceeds its normal height without bearing any corn. It also becomes brittle and breaks easily in the wind.

Motlhala also said that sorghum might be affected negatively. "Sorghum seeds that have not yet germinated, under such heavy rains may even fail to germinate, for the seeds would just rot underground," he said.
