Tlou reveals her frustrations

The Minister of Health Sheila Tlou has said she is traumatised by the fact that primary health care is not under her portfolio.

She told Mmegi that the situation frustrates her because she cannot drive programmes and policies meant to promote primary health care. Primary health care falls under the Ministry of Local Government. But Tlou is concerned that as the Minister of Health, she is often blamed for problems in the sub-sector that covers primary hospitals, clinics, and health posts.

"People come to us with complaints involving services at primary health care and they expect us as the Ministry of Health to improve things. When I tell people that such and such a clinic or hospital does not fall under my ministry, people look at me like I am being funny, and I understand that because they expect the Ministry of Health to be in charge of any health related matter," she said.
