Threat to kill defendant threatens to kill prosecutor

FRANCISTOWN: Drama ensued at a magistrate's court here yesterday when a man facing a single count of threat-to-kill said he would beat and kill the prosecutor.

During his appearance in court, Goitsemodimo Setume, 22 defied an order from magistrate Masie Moyo to leave the dock and fired salvos at the prosecutor, Mangistu Chigala, saying she was incompetent. Police officers dragged him from the dock but he continued with his diatribe after occupying his seat in the gallery. He was eventually handcuffed and taken out of court because he was disturbing proceedings.

Outside court, more drama ensued as he threatened to kill Chigala after serving his sentence. "I am going to beat and kill you after serving my sentence. You are a nuisance," Setume told Chigala.  However, the prosecutor told Mmegi that he would not lay a charge of threat-to-kill against Setume. "I have been a police officer for many years and don't feel threatened by his words. I have received many death threats in the course of my duty," said a calm Chigala.
