They are out to get me - Lekoba

After defecting to the Botswana National Front (BNF) from the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), the councillor for Itumeleng ward in Gaborone Baipidi Lekoba is now faced with hostile forces from both parties.

With only about two years to the 2009 general election, it appears some politicians have started sharpening their knives for the backstabbing, to find their way into council chambers.
In an interview with Mmegi yesterday, Lekoba claimed that there are some BDP councillors who have teamed up with their BNF counterparts to de-campaign her.
She claims the BNF councillors from other constituencies are de-campaigning her by bringing in another member as her competitor for the ward, while the BDP does not seem to have gotten over her decision to cross the floor and want to destroy her politically.
She indicated that the man who is playing with the idea of dethroning her in the ward (name withheld) has even started campaigning, to the extent of going to the BNF head offices requesting the voters' roll.
"He is now saying he was doing that with the intention of enticing more people to join the party, but we all know that he wanted to do the house-to-house campaign without informing me," Lekoba said, adding that the voters' roll was never released to the man because she, as the ward coordinator, had not granted the permission.
She further indicated that she is not leaving the BNF as she has taken up life membership. "I would have taken maybe a 10-year membership if I had intentions of defecting from the party. Apart from this incident I was given a warm welcome at BNF," she said.
When reached for comment the BNF publicity secretary Moeti Mohwasa stated that it would be unfair to discuss such matters in the media, as they are internal. "If members are having some grievances they must alert the office so that proper channels are followed," he said.
