The truth about BOJA Part 1

An announcement appeared in the Government Gazette - probably read only by the people who write it - for the Botswana Journalists Association to 'show cause' why it should not be struck of the list of registered societies with the government Registrar of Societies.

Perhaps the more appropriate action for BOJA to ask the Registrar of Societies to show cause why the journalists should still be registered at that office. The registrar's office has offered BOJA absolutely nothing by way of exposure to societies that share similar aspirations. It has done nothing to communicate with BOJA about legal or political developments that would affect or influence its status as a representative grouping of journalists and media professionals. The registration of a Press Council, and submission of a media Bill to parliament went without notice from the Registrar to interested societies registered at the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The Registrar's word would have played a useful role in enlightening BOJA about the possibilities that accession of government to the ILO conventions would have implied for state media operatives who had until that time been legally denied the right to form and join trade unions such as the Botswana Journalists and Allied Workers Union.
