At the beginning there was Mmegi Publishing Trust (MPT) which was formed in 1988 as a media advocacy organization mainly to run Mmegi Wa Dikgang newspaper it had inherited from Foundation For Education with Production (FEP).

Mmegi Wa Dikgang was originally a community newspaper whose main aim was to give the common people, the citizens, a voice in the running of their country through contributing ideas to those running the government in our country, Botswana. The vision of the Trust was to contribute through advocacy and media to the development of an open, informed, and accountable Botswana society.

As time went on, in 1992, Dikgang Publishing Company (DPC) was formed to take over and commercialize the running of the now re-named Mmegi newspaper. MPT remained as a majority shareholder after inviting Botswana Mine Workers Union (BMWU), CORDE, and several individuals to invest with it in the newspaper business. The advent of DPC to run the newspaper released MPT to develop other media projects such as those that deal with printing, book publishing, and broadcasting.  There was also a conscious effort to develop Setswana language using the above media.
