The return of the Black Earth

Sometime last year, Andrew Jones arrived in Botswana and caused a stir with his Black Earth Communications (BEC). He made many promises. He presented himself as the Black Moses sent to redeem the people from the slavery of the white race. The white people, he declared, were using electronic media to exploit the black race.

"For decades we have been ripped off and the media has been used to make us lack self-esteem," Jones declared when he came to apply for a licence to operate a satellite TV service to rival the monopoly of Multichoice.


A year later, the entrepreneur is still adamant that the white race has invaded the TV channels to sell their propaganda and BEC was set up to counter this.
"Our mission is to make a difference in society in a profitable way. Though we are bound to admit our past mistakes, we have to endure trials and tribulations that go with it. That is part and parcel of the deal," he insists.
