The Pyramids Mean Everything To Little Michael

CAIRO: At the pyramids found in Giza on the outskirts of the Egyptian capital Cairo, there is a very interesting young man.

He prefers to provide only his first name as Michael. Michael is a very determined man. Although he is 16 years old he looks eight years younger. He has spent most of his life at the pyramids.

But the young man does not only spend most of his life at the pyramids for fun. He is making a living and in fact, the reason he and his family are still living today is because of his hard work. Michael buys items and sells them to tourists visiting the pyramids. He has been doing that while he was still very young and cannot remember exactly at what age he started selling the wares. He has never been to school in his life and does not want to but he speaks perfect English. He can also speak other languages including Italian, all of which he learnt through his interactions with the tourists. "My friend, I do not need to go to school in order to survive. My mother and father are very old and cannot provide anything for the family; so I am the bread-winner," he tells me. In conversation with him, one can immediately conclude that he has made up his mind. He says if he had to go to school, he would have to pop out 3000 Egyptian pounds every month.
