If the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) were to have its way, by the end of this week it would have exited the coalition Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) as its relationship with the coalition led by Duma Boko has seemingly broken down irretrievably. Mmegi Staffer RYDER GABATHUSE looks deeper into the BCP/UDC quandaries

For a long time, the body languages communicated by Boko and his (now suspended) deputy Dumelang Saleshando was of two men in deep crisis at the helm of a party challenging to oust the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) from nearly 60 years in power.

The BDP has been ruling the country since the colonial era in 1966 and its challengers have been failing to mount a rock-solid contest 57 years later.

The BDP as a party known to have ample resources has always held its primaries well in time, but this time around that was not the case. The first leg of the primaries was held last weekend, with the final leg being billed for the coming weekend. This time around, the BDP failed to shine in its primary elections.
