The awakening of the coal giant

At a conference to acknowledge Botswana's greatest source of wealth held at the Gaborone International Convention Centre yesterday, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, Dr Akolang Tombale, said Botswana's coal production is expected to grow by more than 10 times in the next five years due to the expansion of the Morupule Power Station and the extensive evaluation of coal-bed methane gas in several parts of Botswana.

The theme of the conference was "The Awakening of the Coal Giant".
"These projects will increase coal production by more than 10 fold by 2012. We are optimistic that other coal-based projects will come on stream to further boost coal production in Botswana."

Tombale considered the conference as one offering Botswana an opportunity to promote its coal resources, to showcase what the country can offer to potential investors, as well as share information and offer networking opportunities with coal experts.
"The abundance of coal resources in Botswana has been known for a long time, but economics have conspired against the significant exploitation of these resources in the past."
