Teachers To Boycott Marking Exams

The Botswana Secondary Teachers Union (BOSETU) has said its members will boycott marking examinations next year if their conditions of work are not improved.

Speaking at a meeting last Thursday at the Gaborone Senior School (GSS) grounds, the BOSETU teachers agreed that the union must negotiate the conditions and if nothing comes out, they will boycott the marking of the exams next year. "The reason why we called this meeting this late is that we were busy attending some meetings outside the country. The situation has not changed, even after the examinations department was transformed into a parastatal organisation," the BOSETU president, Eric Ditau said.

He revealed that they have tried their best to negotiate with the Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) but nothing has been done. "After we invited the teachers involved to this meeting, they then requested an urgent meeting even when the executive committee was engaged somewhere else," he said. He added that even though the department was transformed into a parastatal and called BEC to improve working conditions, nothing has improved. "We have even received a letter threatening that they will be taken to court if we boycott the marking but we are ready for them after meeting our legal advisors," Ditau said.
