TB survivor as fit as a fiddle again

FRANCISTOWN: Samson Machesa, 32, is a former tuberculosis (TB) patient who says the disease would have killed him if he had ignored taking his medication regularly as prescribed by doctors.

Speaking at the Area W Clinic in Francistown where hundreds of people gathered to commemorate the TB Week yesterday, under the theme, "Transforming the fight towards elimination", Machesa said that although TB was a killer disease, sufferers would survive if they adhered to their regimens.

Giving his personal testimony, Machesa said he previously led a carefree life characterised by high alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking. "I smoked a lot. In a day I would smoke the whole pack of Peter Stuyvesant, containing about 10-20 cigarettes," he said. As a result of the unhealthy living and tobacco smoking, Machesa said that he contracted TB, which made him weak.
