The Department of Veterinary Services has announced a nationwide ban on the movement of cloven-hoofed animal products because of the suspected outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) at Butale Syndicate Cattlepost in Matsiloje.

The ban affects exports and domestic sales. A statement from the department says that a complete countrywide movement ban has been instituted with immediate effect. Director of Veterinary Services, Phillemon Motsu said that currently, the country cannot sell any of the said animals or their products either locally or externally.

However, imports are allowed in the country. "The said animals and their fresh products cannot be moved from one area to another within the country, but we are free to buy from outside the country," he said. All cattle slaughter facilities including export abattoirs have been closed with immediate effect.
