Suspected BDF arsonist undergoes psychiatric examination

FRACISTOWN: A 30-year-old teacher suspected of torching a barrack at Botswana Defence Force (BDF) Area S Camp in Francistown in January has been taken for psychiatric evaluation.

The police told Principal Magistrate, Dumisani Bagopi yesterday that the prosecution is still waiting for the results of the psychiatric examination of Bonno Keikanyeng, a guidance and counselling teacher at Pandagala Junior Secondary  School in Tutume.Inspector Mengistu Chigala who is prosecuting in the case said that the purpose of Keikanyeng's appearance before the magistrate was to update the court about the progress of investigations in the matter. He said the prosecution is waiting for the affidavit from the police forensic laboratory on the matter. He added that the album showing pictures of the barracks allegedly burnt by Keikanyeng is ready and promised to avail it to the defence and all other documents relevant in the matter. Defence lawyer Kabelo Gaonyadiwe confirmed what the prosecution said before court. He asked the prosecution to serve him with all documents at the next mention date. The magistrate told the prosecution to give the defence all pertinent documents in the case by June 21. Keikanyeng is alleged to have torched a 25-room barrack housing 100 soldiers at Francistown Botswana Defence Force (BDF) Area S Camp in January. She is married to a junior army officer based at the camp.
