Stricken farmers call for crops insurance cover

SELEBI-PHIKWE: The director of Crop Production in the Ministry of Agriculture, Galeitsiwe Ramokapane has said that government is trying to attract insurance companies to assist farmers in the event of losses to disasters.

Speaking during an interview, Ramokapane said that though farmers’ associations are still in negotiations with potential insurance companies, there is a delay as the companies are reluctant because farming is a risky undertaking.

Ramokapane added that the only insurance cover available is under the Integrated Support Programme for Arable Agricultural Development (ISPAAD), but it is in the form of government paying interest on loans from government financial institutions like NDB and CEDA.
