The Botswana government is seeking partners to set up a leather processing plant, Vice-President, Ponatshego Kedikilwe said at a press conference yesterday.

He said that land has already been identified to establish the plant and the government is currently negotiating with a number of companies to come and set up the facility.

"Nine hectares for the plot have been identified, a feasibility study has been done and the cost of the plant was estimated in the region of P200 million - two years ago," he explained. Kedikilwe said that at the moment, the leather incubation initiative is facing challenges of securing a partner who will be prepared to set up in Botswana.
For many years, the government has been accused of neglecting the leather processing sector despite the fact that the country has 2.5 million cattle.
