State media regulation challenging for NBB

The chairperson of the National Broadcasting Board (NBB), Dr Masego Mpotokwane, has admitted that regulating state media has proved a challenge.

Mpotokwane said the challenge ensues from the fact that Department of Broadcasting Services (DBS), which houses the two government controlled radio stations, Radio Botswana 1 and 2, as well as the Botswana Television, is not only supervised through the Broadcasting Act.

"The core of the problem is [DBS] entities, although subject to the Broadcasting Act, are also controlled by the Public Service Act," Mpotokwane said yesterday.  He was speaking yesterday at the opening of a two-day broadcasting conference.
