State benchmarks on Independent Police Complaints Tribunal

Botswana government is currently benchmarking a motion by an opposition Member of Parliament (MP) that an Independent Police Complaints Tribunal be set up to safeguard citizens against police brutality.

According to Nehemiah Modubule, MP for Lobatse (MP), the establishment of an Independent Police Complaints Tribunal will safeguard citizens against police brutality which has become fashionable indicated by the escalating rate of police officers fingered time and again for torture, disappearance and murder of suspects.

Minister of Security and Defence, Edwin Batshu told Mmegi that such benchmarks would assist his ministry on how best to come up with such a tribunal funds permitting.  "Well, as you might be aware, MP Modubule recently passed a motion advocating for the establishment of such an independent institution.
