Stakeholders discuss foster care

A one-day stakeholders workshop was held in Gaborone yesterday to discuss ways of rolling out the foster care programme. The workshop was organised by Childline Botswana and the government departments of Social Services; and Social and Community Development.

The gathering heard that a total of 53,000 orphans are currently registered in Botswana and many other children are in situations of abuse, risk and abandonment.

The councillor for Selemela ward in Gaborone, Binki Kerileng told the workshop that people tend to think the plight of children in Botswana is being exaggerated. She asserted that there is a trend of abuse of orphans and a general failure to take care of children.
