SSK mark Month of Youth Against AIDS

Sir Seretse Khama Memorial Community Junior Secondary School yesterday commemorated the start of Month of Youth Against AIDS (MYAA) with the intention of taking the message to the students.

According to one of the organisers and head of pastoral care department Lillian Mokhupuki, the month is celebrated to reach out to the students in a different way from the messages that are relayed in classrooms. "We always pass the message of the fight against HIV/AIDS in class, which is now kind of boring for the students and by organising these events we want to reach out to them in a different way that is of fun to them," Mokhupuki said. She added that the teachers in the guidance and counselling section, led by senior teacher Mercy Peloewetse, want to make the students aware that "as young people they have a responsibility to be involved in the fight against the pandemic".

The MYAA is commemorated annually at SSKM and Mokhupuki attributes this to the low rates of dropouts due to pregnancy at the school. "Last year not a single student dropped out and this year we have registered only one. It is through activities like this that we are making the breakthrough because the little message that they get helps them to either abstain from sex or protect themselves when they can't abstain," Mokhupuki asserted.
