SSK airport construction cost skyrockets to P550m

There seems to be no end in sight for the never-ending story that is the multimillion Pula expansion of the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport, with costs now having spiralled from the initial P432m to P550m. This is an increase of over P150 million from the initial budget. With so much yet to be done no one can confidently say how much the final cost will be by the time the project is fully completed. The counting continues.

With six months to go before year-end, the airport still bears the look of a construction site just beginning to take off. The project managers, against all the odds, however tell The Monitor that come year end, the costly project will have been completed and handed over to government. That's what they said when they began work at the site in 2008, following a fast-tracked tender system that saw a Chinese company, Sino Hydro, given 23 months to complete the project; from June 10, 2008 to May 11, 2010, to be exact.

The first phase, originally scheduled for completion by November 2009 was not delivered until May 2010 - a six-month delay.Up to now however the Department of Buildings Services (DBES) has resisted the hand-over of the Phase One project because there have been several aspects gone wrong that the contractor must make right before the project can be handed over.
