The suspension of members of the Student Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Botswana (UB) is being used as a ruse to blackmail the students into joining the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), the leader of the group has said.

Infact, Richard Khumoekae has almost pinpointed the vice-chancellor of the University of Botswana, Professor Thabo Fako, as the mastermind behind the scheme. He told a BNF rally in Tlokweng on Saturday that Fako is a member of the BDP, saying that was why Botswana National Front (BNF) youth had always been "sidelined" by the institution. Khumoekae alleged that when Fako was still a lecturer, he became part of a committee tasked with damage control when huge numbers of members of the BDP left to form the Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD).

The committee was chaired by Education Minister, Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi, Khumoekae said.  It was against this background that he and his colleagues were suspended after disturbances on the main campus in January.
