Sporadic outbreaks of FMD in Ngamiland

There have been sporadic outbreaks of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in some parts of Ngamiland District, North West District Council (NWDC) chairman John Benn has said.

He told a full council meeting that some traces of the disease were detected early last month but due to the recent floods many areas are inaccessible, making it difficult to monitor and maintain some sections of the buffalo fence. He said the outbreak of the disease in southern Kareng was recorded by veterinary officers on July 6 and large herds of buffaloes were spotted roaming the fence in the Okavango Delta and Lake Ngami areas.

"Our district remains a disease control zone with standard control routine in place namely obligatory restrictions on animals as well as their by-products movement and vaccinations. I therefore plead with you councillors to convey information to farmers to assist in restricting movement of their livestock especially cattle," he said. He stated that any illegal movement of cattle in risky areas like the buffalo fence should be reported.
