S/Phikwe suspends street light repairs

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Selebi-Phikwe Town Council has suspended all repairs to street lights in Phase 1 and Phase 2 commercial plots as it tries to recoup losses it has suffered in the failed Accelerated Land Servicing Programme.

The council's Principal Public Relations Officer Ogomoditse Gaokgethelwe  said that all repair works for Phase 1 and 2 commercial plots street lighting have been suspended mainly because of lack of developments in those areas. Lack of funds has also led to council suspending the repair works.

"The moment we repair as has been the case, the likelihood of the street lights being vandalised is very high."She stressed that up and until there is significant development in those areas the council would not reconsider maintenance of the street lights. She said that council is currently compiling accurate figures on the amount of money paid to Botswana Power Corporation from the time the street lights in Phase 1 and 2 commercial plots were installed. "Repairs have been carried out before on the said streets lights in both areas and the accurate figures on the amount spent are also still being compiled. Currently there is no charge the council is accruing for Phase 1 commercial plots since there is no supply to the vandalised street lights and even the pillar box that hosts the meter box has been totally vandalised," she said.
