S/Phikwe district in limbo after ACHAP departure

Selebi-Phikwe District AIDS Coordinator, Lameck Myegwa, told Mmegi this week that their operations were affected "in a big way" by the departure of ACHAP. Myegwa said Selebi-Phikwe was one of the most affected areas by the HIV pandemic, making funding crucial.

With the government still reeling from the effects of the 2009 recession, they had nowhere to turn to for funding for the 2011/2012 financial year and had secured only a quarter of what they needed, he explained. ACHAP pulled out of the Selebi-Phikwe region at the end of 2010. "When ACHAP was still in Selebi-Phikwe, they gave us enough funds to carry out our projects," Myegwa said. "Things have changed now. Some of the priority items for this year have not been funded at all."
