S/Phikwe council will oppose Mayor's suit

SELEBI-PHIKWE: The groundswell of antipathy for the Mayor has crystallised in an emphatic resolution to oppose Lekang Mukokomani in the High Court here.

Meeting in special full council on Wednesday, SPTC also resolved not to outsource legal representation but to use its resident principal counsel, Phillip Mokone, to oppose Mukokomani's court application. The matter had to be put to a vote after it became clear that the council was divided between those who wanted to oppose the Mayor in court and those who wanted the council to withdraw the motion that toppled him.

Three councillors voted with their feet, but the remaining 11 councillors voted. The scales were tipped heavily against the embattled Mayor: Nine for opposing his application; two abstentions. The special full council was chaired by the recently elected Deputy Mayor Maxwell Kelebetse because the Mayor himself was not present. The council is now preparing answering affidavits and perusing minutes of the last three council meetings which were to be approved in another special meeting this afternoon. The council is under pressure to submit its answering affidavits to Mukokomani's attorney at Ditiro and Jani law firm by Tuesday next week. The council will also continue to consult with the Ministry of Local Government's lawyer and the Attorney Generals Chambers throughout the case.
