SPEDU faced with staff exodus?

SELEBI-PHIKWE: The Selebi-Phikwe Economic Diversification Unit (SPEDU) has denied that recent staff departures may undermine its operations.

So far, three project officers and two technical advisors have jumped ship but SPEDU spokesman, Kenneth Boikhutshwane has said there is no cause for alarm. Currently, SPEDU has only two project officers yet it is about to undertake a feasibility study on the upgrading of the Selebi-Phikwe Airport, in conjunction with Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB).It needs a project officer with engineering expertise for the job yet the two project officers it has are in charge of tourism and capacity building and education.

Those who left were responsible for agriculture, business development, manufacturing and engineering.Boikhutshwane said the project manager, who oversees and supervises project officers, including the departed ones, would be handling the feasibility study. He denied that the departures will have an adverse effect on the operations of the agency which is currently going through a transformation process. "Just like any other organisation that is going through changes, there are many aspects that are considered such as hiring and losing employees.Despite the departure of the officers, SPEDU board of directors has taken a decision not to hire any new staff members at the moment until the transformation process has been completed in the next six months," he said.  Boikhutshwane explained that they do not want a situation whereby they hire someone and after six months, they terminate the contract.
