'Speak for the masses,' says UB academic

Botswana intellectuals have been advised 'to speak to the masses' and to avoid twisting facts in the quest for material gain and popularity amongst the ruling elite.

Dean of Faculty of Education at the University of Botswana (UB), Dr Theophilus Mooko, said at the start of the second annual outreach conference in Gaborone Monday night that intellectuals need to realise that they play an important role in advancing social justice.

"They need to speak to the masses. For this to be realised, there is a need for intellectuals to ensure that they do not become servants of the dominant elites," Mooko said, speaking on behalf of Professor Frank Youngman, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) at UB.
