Sparks likely to fly at BDP meeting

FRANCISTOWN: As the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) Central Committee meets for the first time after the Kanye congress on Monday, there is a likelihood that sparks will fly.

The committee is dominated by the Kedikilwe-Kwelagobe faction and will come face-to-face with their nemesis led by President Ian Khama and the five members he nominated to serve in the party organ.

The faction occupies all the 10 elective positions, while their rivals in the Nkate-Merafhe alliance dominate all the lower posts after Khama drafted them in as nominated members of sub-committees. The Monday meeting will be attended by the 10 elected members, the President, his five nominated members and chairpersons of the BDP National Youth Executive Committee and the Women's Wing.
