Long queues were seen in the most hotly contested areaas, such as Johannesburg and Cape Town, with the vote said to be fairly smooth.
The ruling African National Congress (ANC) controls all of South Africa's nine provinces except the Western Cape.
While it is widely acknowledged that Khama holds the title of Kgosi, the government’s failure to properly gazette his recognition has raised serious concerns about adherence to legal procedures and the credibility of traditional leadership.
