South African robbery suspect denied bail

FRANCISTOWN: A 34-year-old South African charged with armed robbery was denied bail yesterday by Francistown magistrate Thato Mujaji. Elliot Khumalo failed to gain his freedom when the magistrate agreed with the prosecutors submission that it is not advisable to grant bail because the suspect is not a resident of Botswana and crime he is charged with has just the been committed.

The South African is in the dock over a violent robbery at Jumbo Cash and Carry in Francistown on March 31. About P84, 000 was stolen in the robbery. The prosecutor Inspector Isaac Bojang of Central Police Station said that investigations are at an initial stage and the stolen money has not yet been recovered, hence the suspect should not be granted bail. He said Khumalo is not a resident of Botswana and he is likely to abscond if set free.

The accused is a South African and has no permanent residence in this country, he added.
Bojang said two suspects in the robbery are still at large and so the accused could not be released on bail just yet as this would prejudice police investigations.
He submitted that so far, the Botswana Police have contacted the South African Police regarding the matter. I apply that the accused be further remanded for 14 days, he said. Khumalo who looked scared pleaded with the court not to detain him. He said that he understood the charge but he did not know anything about it.
