Soldiers punish BDP in F/town East - rumour

FRANCISTOWN: Unsubstantiated reports say that some members of the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) had vowed "to punish" the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) in the Francistown East constituency during the October 16 general election.

Mmegi is privy to information that it was a foregone conclusion from the city's army barracks that BDP parliamentary hopeful Phandu Skelemani and his councillors would be punished by being voted out. Skelemani is the former Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Skelemani's apparent sin is that during his tenure as Minister of Justice, Defence and Security he frustrated plans for a salary increase for the soldiers but instead recommended a raise for Botswana Police officers.
