Thirty five (35) soldiers who were deployed at the just ended exercise Highlanders in Lesotho are accusing the Botswana Defence Force of foul play after it allegedly failed to pay them the full amount of the deployment allowance.

A source from the Special Forces Unit told Mmegi that before the soldiers were deployed to Lesotho, the BDF promised them that they would be paid an amount of P904 for each day they spent away from their base.  Upon returning from the exercise the soldiers were only paid P6,000 each, while their counterparts from other SADC countries were paid about P65,000 per person after the exercise.

The Source who is a senior officer within the BDF told Mmegi that on top of what the soldiers were supposed to be paid from their respective countries for the exercise SADC had contributed some money to be paid to the soldiers as allowances. The spokesperson of BDF, Colonel Tebo Dikole confirmed to Mmegi that 35 soldiers from the Special Forces Unit did attend the exercise that was aimed at enhancing cooperation and inter-operability, between the SADC Special Forces Community.
