Solar energy too expensive - Mokaila

Although solar energy is the way to go in the future, building a solar power station is too expensive, especially for developing countries, the Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources Kitso Mokaila has said.

He accused some western lobbyists of trying to inhibit developing countries from growing their economies through coal-powered stations while they got where they are today using the same facilities. "Imagine, a solar One Mega Watt power station costing P93 million, that amount can be spent on providing electricity to 28 villages," he said.
He added that going the solar route would also require government to make a lot of changes to existing infrastructure.

The Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) is negotiating with Eskom for an extended power supply contract until December as a contingency measure, but not that it  doubts the Morupule Power B Power Station, which commences power production next Wednesday. Mokaila once again assured the nation that the three units at Morupule B Power Station will be functional by next Thursday.During the same briefing, the CEO of BPC Jacob Raleru confirmed that they are negotiating an arrangement with Eskom for contingency measures. Eskom and BPC have two contracts - 200MW non-firm and 100MW firm, the former expires next Wednesday.
