SMS alerts peeve customers

Local mobile network subscribers have complained about promotional message alerts that network providers incessantly send to them.

Mascom branding and communications manager, Obonye Malope, told Mmegi that it is a common practice within the mobile industry to alert and inform customers regularly about on-going promotions and new services using the bulk SMS channel, which is an efficient way to reach customers.  "We are confident that the vast majority of customers appreciate receiving the information," Malope stated. He said that they are well aware of some customer's complaints and that those who do not want to receive them can indicate that through the customer care line or at Mascom outlets.

Orange public relations manager, Tummie Ramsden explained that it is their customer service policy to send messages informing their customers about new promotions and improvement of services but they strive to be reasonable when sending out bulk SMSes.
