Speaking in Parliament this week, Skelemani said the amendment will not only benefit the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) but any party that is in power. He said the specially elected MPs are not going to boost the BDP majority in Parliament because the party wins handsomely in elections.

Skelemani said since the first elections in the 1960s, the number of women in Parliament has been low though female voters are the majority.  "Can we stand up and say it is fair when a great number of people who vote are women? It is fair that we continue to produce people who are working hard only to get represented by four to five women."
