Skelemani links Intelligence Bill to economy

The proposed Security and Intelligence Services Act is necessary for the country because it would protect the economy, cabinet minister Phandu Skelemani told a Kgotla meeting in Kanye yesterday. He said that the establishment of an independent intelligence services organisation would help the country secure the lucrative European diamond market.

"The Kimberley Process which was established to guard against the sale of blood diamonds is not really enough because there could be crooks looking for a loophole to use and they would probably bring some of those diamonds to our country and then sell them from here. And it would be fatal if our diamonds mix with any of the blood diamonds because we would lose the market and our security agents would be working to ensure that such things do not happen, that would form part of their job," he said.

Sekelemani said that despite many countries claiming to be friendly to Botswana, there is still a security threat from some of the countries. He said security agents are needed to trace potential enemies.
