Local subcontractors at the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (SSKIA) expansion project are up in arms against Chinese State-owned Sino Hydro over non-payment of completed work.

Sino Hydro is engaged by government to carry out expansion works in the  P600 million project that is nearing completion. While the contractor is already winding up, some local contractors who were involved in minor works have been left with huge debts due to non-payment.

One of the subcontractors whose name cannot be revealed, for fear of victimisation said that one of the companies working there was forced to retrench between 30-40 employees after he could not get payment for work done in 14 months. "Right now the man curses the day he started doing business with the Chinese company. We all do. But we are just hoping that one day we will get paid," he said.
