The more than three decade Sino-Botswana diplomatic relationship is poised to grow to greater heights.

Addressing guests in Gaborone at an event held to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of his country, Chinese ambassador, Liu Huanxing said that Botswana and China have cooperated well in education and human resource development. He said that besides awarding 26 scholarships to Batswana this year, China has established the Chinese Class of Confucius Institute at the University of Botswana, which was officially launched this month. The institute will provide an opportunity for Batswana to study Chinese language.

The ambassador said that Chinese experts will soon land in Botswana to help develop agriculture. "In June this year, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, together with Standard Bank of South Africa, signed an agreement with Botswana Power Corporation to provide $825 million of credit to the Morupule Power Station expansion project. The bank of China is also working on the feasibility of financing the Mmamabula energy project," he said. China will celebrate its 60th anniversary on October 1. The ambassador said that in the six decades that modern China has been in existence, it has become one of the world's most dynamic countries with a GDP annual growth averaging around eight percent. China has the third largest economy in the world.
