Single-parenthood: a scourge for single mothers

FRANCISTOWN: It does not look like the problem of absent fathers will go away in the near future as single mothers heave under the yoke of raising their children alone, The Monitor has discovered.

In a mini-survey conducted by the paper last week, single mothers are blaming the fathers of their children for abandonment and shirking their responsibilities as fathers.In fact the mothers said raising a child solo can be stressful as even when there is a father around, it is still be difficult.

When The Monitor approached them, single mothers around Francistown could not help but raise concerns about raising children alone.They say it was very hard for them to try to be everything for either their girls or boys.Obonye Kereemang 35, a stay-at-home mother of three from Borolong says she is raising her children alone after their father left them when her last born was only two months.  "I have three beautiful children, whom I have had to raise basically all by myself.  "My youngest who is now five years old does not know her father. For many years, my two older children and I lived with their father even though he was distant to us. "He only came home to eat and sleep, but when my third child arrived, he decided to move and stay with another woman, " she says.
