Siele fields worker queries at BCL

SELEBI-PHIKWE: The Minister of Labour and Home Affairs, Peter Siele, has promised to visit BCL mine to get first hand information about the employment of expatriates on the mine.

He made the promise at a Kgotla meeting in Botshabelo last Tuesday.  There were complaints that expatriates dominate the mine and hold positions that locals qualify for. Among the people who sought the minister's attention were those who were dismissed for engaging in an illegal strike in 2006. Some were among the 461 who were dismissed in 2004.

The former machine men said they were at the mercy of the minister since companies that are contracted to BCL cannot employ them. Siele said he had received many complaints from workers calling upon him to dismantle the department of labour because it takes sides and favours employers.
