Shortage of trained citizen lawyers in Botswana has forced the judiciary to rely on expatriate magistrates "so it can provide a decent level of services".

Chief Justice Julian Nganunu said this at the opening of the legal year at the High Court in Lobatse yesterday.

Nganunu said their biggest challenge is the shortage of citizen lawyers who could become magistrates.
