Despite a slight increase in the output of nursing graduates this year, the challenge of shortage of different cadres of health care personnel in the government facilities remains a matter of great concern, Health Minister Lesego Motsumi has said.

She was speaking at the Affiliated Health Training Institutions 13th joint graduation ceremony at the University of Botswana Stadium where 681 health practitioners graduated on Friday. "Evidence has shown that with a sufficient number of health workers who possess a good skills mix and competency, a high quality of health care can be delivered," she said.

Motsumi explained that the health training institutions are currently undergoing a transformation process, which aims at making them more competitive and responsive to the needs of both internal and external customers. Motsumi revealed that her ministry has challenges regarding human resource for health in different areas including lecturers at health training institutions. "We continue to make efforts to identify strategies that will attract and retain staff," she said adding that it is with the current upgrading of Serowe and Molepolole Institutes of Health Sciences and the planned upgrading of Deborah Retief School of Nursing that they expect to increase the overall local training capacity of local health training institutions to 1,366. She said in addition, the upcoming UB Medical School would help in alleviating the problem.
