Set up old people's homes, MP urges govt

Member of Parliament (MP) for Francistown South Wynter Mmolotsi wants government to establish old age facilities in the major centres of Botswana to help care for old and sick people who have no families.

He requested government to make the facilities accessible for senior citizens who are 70 years old and above.
In a motion presented to Parliament last Friday, Mmolotsi said the homes could be used as safe havens for the elderly homeless and the homeless sick, whose families cannot take care of them.  While he acknowledged that the care of the elderly is, culturally, a family affair in Botswana, Mmolotsi said this culture places a high burden, financially and emotionally, on families.

He said the establishment of old people's homes might also relieve this burden on families.  He said setting up old people's homes is also prudent regarding the consequences of living in a society that has a high HIV prevalence."The HIV/AIDS scourge is killing the young and active, leaving old people who will have nobody to look after them," he said.
