Central District police have been hit by a wave of theft cases of the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) electric copper cables.

Police revealed they are investigating two cases of copper cable theft recorded over the weekend in Palapye and Serowe in which thieves stole electric copper cables from homes.

No 2 district officer commanding, Senior Superintendent Paul Oketsang told The Monitor they are concerned with the offence having grown prevalent in the Palapye and Serowe areas.

“It looks like the criminals target unoccupied and vacant houses and cut electric cables from the electric pole to the house,” he said.

“These cases are a concern because we record them every week. Looking at the frequency of the theft incidents we suspect that the criminals might be having a market [to supply] and the demand is high.”

Oketsang stated that investigations into the matter were ongoing to arrest suspects.
