Serial rapist resigned to life in jail

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Selebi-Phikwe Chief Magistrate Gaedupe Makgato recently tried hard to convince serial rape convict, Badisa Lefeletse, to say something in mitigation.

Lefeletse, who was convicted last week on three counts of rape, said he has given up on freedom. He said that he has been in prison for a long time and cannot think of anything to say in mitigation. "I have been in and out of prison since 2007. I have given up. The court must also consider that prison is not a good place to stay. I plead with the court for my sentences to run concurrently. I did not plan to commit the offences," he finally said. Makgato had reminded Lefeletse that each of the three counts attracts a minimum 10 years jail term.

"It is tough but I expect you to say something that I can take into consideration when passing the sentence. I need to know about your background. Maybe your sentences could run concurrently and it means you might serve up to 30 years in jail," said Makgato.
