Selebi-Phikwe grapples with drugs shortage

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Drug availability level in Selebi-Phikwe has fallen to 69 percent, causing an acute shortage and hampering the efficient delivery of health services. "One of the seemingly insurmountable problems that council has been grappling with is the shortage of drugs in health facilities," said Selebi-Phikwe mayor Amogelang Mojuta at a council meeting.

The national drug availability level is 80 percent. The mayor said the government has waived tender regulations to allow councils to procure drugs from private pharmaceutical companies. But the demand for drugs is high and the private sector companies are unable to meet it.

Mojuta said the shortage of manpower affects the efficient provision of health services.
