Seametso remains defiant

A former member of the Botswana Democratic Party Youth League (BDPYL), Alec Seametso says there is nothing wrong with political parties sympathising with the striking government workers.

Seametso, who recently resigned from the BDPYL citing lack of freedom of speech, told striking workers in Kanye that he decided to call it a day because he is a concerned citizen.

"I took this decision not to show lack of respect to anyone but as a concerned father of these children who are not receiving any education because their teachers are on strike and nothing is being done about it. I took this decision because as much as I have to thank those who nominated me as a councillor I have to face up to the reality that the future of the country has been put into jeopardy," Seametso told the gathering.  (Civil servants, most of them who fall under the Botswana Federation of Public Service Unions (BOFEPUSU) were initially demanding a 16 percent pay rise, but this has since been cut to three percent without preconditions.)
